No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
